Small Space Organization

3 Core Tips to Make Your Home Feel 20㎡ Bigger

For small apartment dwellers, organization is about smart space planning to maximize every inch. Many struggle with small-space organization due to lack of proper methods. Today, I’m sharing 3 proven tips to eliminate clutter and make your compact home spacious and functional.

Tip 1: Utilize Vertical Space—Go Up for Extra Area

Vertical space is the most underutilized area in small homes. Walls, cabinet tops and door backs are often overlooked but hold many items. For instance, install floating shelves in the living room for books and decor (no floor space taken), hang a multi-pocket organizer on the bedroom door for accessories, and use sealed boxes on kitchen upper cabinets for rarely used cookware and dry goods to keep countertops clear.

Key rule for vertical organization: light items on high shelves, heavy ones on low to avoid shelf strain. Choose minimalist organizers to reduce visual clutter and keep the space open.

Tip 2: Categorize Your Belongings—Give Everything a “Home”

Clutter arises when items lack fixed places. The core of categorized organization is “zoning by use and frequency.” Sort belongings and divide areas by usage: in the living room, store remotes, cables and snacks in a layered box, and toys/books in low cabinet drawers; in the bedroom wardrobe, hang in-season clothes and fold off-season ones into vacuum bags to save space and prevent dust/moisture.

I recommend unified-style storage boxes and baskets with clear labels—they keep the space neat, make items easy to find, and boost daily efficiency.

Tip 3: Choose Multi-Functional Furniture—One Piece, Multiple Uses

When furnishing small homes, prioritize multi-functional furniture to reduce the number of pieces and free up space. For the living room, choose a storage sofa with liftable seat cushions for seasonal items; in the dining area, a foldable table works well (spacious for meals, foldable to save space); in the bedroom, opt for a bed with drawers or a storage base to stow idle items and eliminate under-bed clutter.

The essence of organization is convenience. You don’t need a perfectly spotless home—master these tips and use space wisely to turn your small home into a neat, comfortable space.
